IGPA releases new Policy Spotlight: Pandemic Behind Bars

The fourth in IGPA's series of Policy Spotlights related to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic examines conditions in Illinois prisons and jails. The spotlight, authored by Sage Kim, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Robin Fretwell Wilson, IGPA director and the Roger and Stephany Joslin Professor of Law at the University of Illinois College of Law, reports that outbreaks in prisons and jails not only put inmates and staff at risk, they potentially threaten the communities near these facilities. “Preventing COVID-19 transmission in jails and prisons requires steps to ensure that COVID-19 outbreaks within correctional settings do not spill over to the surrounding communities, and that infection does not enter into correctional facilities from the community. Meeting the public health and mental health needs of inmates is not only just, it is smart,” the Policy Spotlight says. Read the full Policy Spotlight.
