Even before COVID-19 hit, Illinois was grappling with a teacher shortage… and a researcher at the University of Illinois Springfield says the pandemic threatens to make that situation much worse.
Assistant professor of teacher education Meghan Kessler says remote instruction has added to teacher workload and increased dissatisfaction with their jobs. And she says it’s not just experienced teachers struggling with new technology demands… she says even young teachers feel like they’re having difficulty connecting with students.
She says state and local administrators need to focus on teacher development and retention in the months ahead.
