Anti-discrimination legislation
Spent a month in residence with the Utah legislature, helping Utah state lawmakers to pass anti-discrimination legislation that balances
religious liberty and LGBT rights. In 2019, Professor Wilson assisted the governor of Utah to craft regulations banning gay conversion therapy.

ABOUT

J. Fred Giertz’s major research interests are in the areas of public finance and regional economic development. He specializes in state and local taxation and expenditure analysis and in regional economic development issues. He has consulted with a number of state agencies and writes frequently on the Illinois budget and general economic issues in publications such as State Tax Notes and the Central Illinois Business Magazine. Prof. Giertz compiles the U of I Flash Index, a monthly indicator of the Illinois economy. His articles have appeared in the National Tax Journal.

Economy

Professor Giertz gave numerous reports dealing with Illinois budget and tax issues, including the first careful analysis of the state’s structural deficit problem.


IGPA Engagement

Professor Giertz organized a substantive portion of Illinois New Legislators Conferences and was the organizer of Illinois Congressional Seminars at IGPA.


Public Service

Professor Giertz was given the Campus Award for Excellence in Public Service (UIUC), October 2001.
