IGPA will be hosting Associate Professor Julian Reif to speak about the Research Scholar Initiative: Air Pollution Trends in Illinois
Julian Reif, a Partnering Scholar at the Institute of Government and Public Affairs and Associate Finance Professor at the Gies College of Business, recently published a Policy Spotlight analyzing air pollution levels in Illinois. Using data from EPA monitoring stations and other sources, the report highlights the complexity of assessing the overall impact of air pollution in the state. It emphasizes the necessity of mitigating health risks for Illinois residents.
According to the findings, a modest reduction of 10 percent in air pollution could potentially increase life expectancy by approximately one year, with the greatest benefits accruing to older adults.
Given the context of global warming and recent events like the 2023 Canadian wildfires, which underscore the urgency of environmental issues, Illinois must prioritize efforts to decrease air pollution. This focus not only aims to improve public health but also ensures sustained health benefits for future generations. |
