The Effects of Illinois Cannabis Regulation & Tax Act
The Institute of Government & Public Affairs invites you to our next faculty coffee on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 from 9 – 10 am CT, virtually, on Zoom.
IGPA will be hosting James Swartz to speak about The Effects of Illinois Cannabis Regulation & Tax Act. The presentation will highlight recent findings from studying the effects of the act, controversy over hemp-derived intoxicating products, and thoughts on difficulties with accessing public health data to conduct research in Illinois.
Dr. James Swartz is a clinical psychologist by training and Professor and Interim Associate Dean for Research in the Jane Addams College of Social Work at UIC. For over thirty-five years, his research has centered on substance misuse including the epidemiology and treatment of substance use and substance use disorders in disadvantaged or stigmatized populations (e.g., criminal offenders, LGBTQ, and socioeconomically disadvantaged racial-ethnic minorities) and co-occurring mental health and health conditions. His most recent work has focused on the opioid epidemic and studying ways to reduce associated overdoses and fatalities as well as on assessing the public health effects of legalizing recreational cannabis use in Illinois. He is currently PI on an ongoing 5-year study of the effects of legalizing adult-use cannabis in Illinois and assessing related changes in public health metrics such as incidence and prevalence of cannabis use, cannabis use disorders, cannabis initiation among Illinois youth, cannabis- poisonings related and hospitalizations and traffic fatalities.
This is a virtual event offered on Zoom. A calendar invitation will be sent after registration.
