IGPA will be hosting Alexandra Filindra and Noah Kaplan to speak about their upcoming IGPA Policy Spotlight titled: The “Chilling Effects” of Gun Carry in Public Places.
Alexandra and Noah’s talk will explore the origins of a new wave of challenges to gun violence prevention laws, outline scholarly opinion on the constitutionality of such laws, and use survey data from national studies to provide evidence that the presence of firearms in public places has the potential to produce significant “chilling effects,” defined as increased apprehension about the safety of visiting various places or engaging in important activities when it is suggested that guns may be present. The findings support the notion that people may be less likely to use public transit, visit parks, attend protests, and even cast a vote if guns are present in these
Alexandra Filindra is a Professor of Political Science and Psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago and is a member of IGPA’s Equity, Justice, and Human Flourishing Working Group. Filindra has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics and is the incoming associate editor of Political Psychology. Her recent book, Race, Rights, and Rifles, explores the origins of the NRA and contemporary gun culture, earning an honorable mention for the Robert E. Lane Award. She will be a Senior Visiting Scholar at Vanderbilt University in Spring 2025 and is currently researching gun politics, public opinion, and democratic erosion.
Noah Kaplan is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Illinois Chicago. Kaplan’s research interests include public opinion, political communication, campaigns and elections, political participation, representation, and quantitative methodology.
