EXPERIENCE &
BACKGROUND

ABOUT

David L. DuBois, is a professor in the Division of Community Health Sciences and Associate Dean for Research in the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health as well as an Associate Director of the UIC Institute for Health Research and Policy. He received his doctorate in clinical-community psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Dr. DuBois’ research examines the contribution of protective factors — particularly self-esteem and mentoring relationships — to resilience and holistic positive development and on translating knowledge in this area to the design of effective youth programs and policies. His research has received federal funding from the National Institutes of Health, Institute of Education Sciences, and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention as well as philanthropic organizations. Current projects include a large-scale randomized control trial of the effectiveness of the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program for crime and delinquency prevention funded by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation. Dr. DuBois is lead co-editor of the Handbook of Youth Mentoring (SAGE Publications) and co-author of After-School Centers and Youth Development: Case Studies of Success and Failure (Cambridge University Press), each of which received awards from the Society for Research on Adolescence. He serves as Director of Research for the Federally-funded National Mentoring Resource Center and as Chair of the Research Advisory Committee of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. He also is founder and moderator of the youth mentoring listserv, which focuses on strengthening connections between research and practice in the field.
