James Kuklinski’s article, “Race: Bridging the great divide” (Op-Ed, Sept. 6), was one of the clearest and calmest pieces I have seen on the subject lately. I would like to second Mr. Kuklinski’s request that media and politicians alike spend more time focusing on positive encounters between the races. It is easy for both blacks and whites to see race as a divisive issue when the idea that we can never understand each other is so commonly reinforced.

Mr. Kuklinski cited research showing that about 10 percent of whites displayed anger and prejudice against blacks. The flip side is that 90 percent did not harbor such prejudice. One cannot deny that prejudice is still alive, but constantly harping on racial divisions and conflicts only reinforces the notion that we can never get past it. We have come a long way from our days of hatred.

Let’s focus on the many communities where blacks and whites live together peacefully and stop bringing the subject of race into every argument.
