Program
NEW Leadership Illinois develops young women to be effective leaders in public service careers. The program targets areas such as leadership education, political savvy, and policy skills. Women leaders from the state, including Illinois women legislators, serve as mentors in the program. The program is structured to emphasize active learning.
How many students will be selected to participate in the Institute?
Approximately 20, contingent on fund availability.
What does the program cost?
All program expenses, including meals, housing, field trips, and materials, are covered by NEW Leadership Illinois. You will be responsible for travel to and from the UIC campus at the start and conclusion of the program. You may want to bring a small amount of spending money for personal expenses.
Can I get course credit for participating?
This depends on your college or university.

Is the selection process competitive?
Yes.
How many letters of recommendation do I need?
Two.
Yes, and it needs to be received by the application deadline in order for your application to be considered complete.
Are you looking for students who are majoring in a specific field?
Many students who major in fields such as political science and women's studies are naturally attracted to the program. But, the program is open to students from all majors. The Institute of Government and Public Affairs is multidiscplinary, COWL members come from a variety of backgrounds, and we are interested in admitting students from a diverse set of disciplinary backgrounds.

Can family and friends visit me during the program?
No. The daily curriculum is packed with activities, workshops, and seminars that will keep you busy throughout the week.
Will I have some free time to explore Chicago?
The program is designed to be engaging on academic, personal, and social levels, and fills the full week (including evenings)! Numerous activities are planned during the week to give you opportunities to socialize with classmates and program faculty and mentors in various locations on and near campus and in downtown Chicago. If you wish to do some sightseeing on your own, you may choose to arrive in Chicago before the Summer Institute begins or stay in Chicago after the Summer Institute has ended, but please note that you will need to make your own travel and housing arrangements.
Will I have access to UIC facilities such as the library, gyms etc.?
Yes. Although our agenda at the Summer Institute is a full-day one, you will have access to UIC facilities.
Should I bring bedding supplies from home?
No. The residence hall provides pillows, sheets, and blankets.
Are special accommodations available for the disabled or hearing impaired?
UIC strives to maintain a barrier-free environment so that students with disabilities can fully access residence halls, programs, and services. If you need a disability accommodation, please contact IGPA.
Will I have roommates?
The Thomas Beckham Hall (TBH) offers each participant their OWN PRIVATE BEDROOM in either a 2 or 4-bedroom apartment. Participants will share the apartment (kitchen, bathroom, and living area) with 1 or 3 other Institute participants.
What should I bring with me?
An alarm clock, hair dryer, umbrella, camera, sun screen, personal care items, sunglasses, note paper, journal, phone cards, comfortable walking shoes.
Will I have the option of visiting a place of religious worship?

You may contact relevant individuals to find out locations and times for organized or individual prayers. You may also contact IGPA for specific arrangements.
Can I bring my car?
Parking is available for up to $9.00 per day, or per exit, from an assigned parking garage or lot. Weekly passes are also available for $30.00 per week. The weekly rate includes unlimited in/out privileges. Please contact IGPA if you would like to bring your car with you to the Summer Institute.
Can I bring my computer with me?
Yes. To activate an Internet connection in your private bedroom a fee of $25 must be paid by program participants. This fee is due two weeks before the Institute begins, and will provide unlimited Internet access for the duration of the program. You will receive details along with your acceptance materials.
Do you cater to dietary restrictions?
Meals will be provided by NEW Leadership Illinois. Should you need any special arrangements, please contact IGPA.
Will I need to bring my health insurance card with me?
Yes, please make sure you have a valid insurance card. In case of an emergency you will be taken to the nearest hospital.
