"School's Out: After-School Programs and Policies that Work"

The three speakers for this event made thought-provoking and insightful research-based presentations about how successful after-school programs achieve their goals, where Illinois ranks relative to other states on funding, innovative approaches other states are taking to design and fund their after-school programs, and how program quality can be assessed for program self-improvement and for accountability.

Speakers:

Priscilla Little, Associate Director, Harvard Family Research Project

 

What Works in After-School Programs? Achieving Educational, Prevention, and Youth Development Goals 

Ms. Little provides intellectual and administrative leadership to the Harvard Family Research Project. She is also Project Manager for HFRP's Out-of-School Time (OST) Learning and Development Initiative focused on building the field of out-of-school time through the timely development and dissemination of information and tools for quality evaluation. Ms. Little's research interests include the evaluation of programs and policies to promote quality out-of-school time experiences for children; early care and education, with a special focus on literacy and school readiness; and family involvement and early childhood program evaluation.

Jennifer Stedron, Program Manager, Education Program, National Conference of State Legislatures

After School: State Policies on Funding, Governance and Quality

Dr. Stedron is a Program Manager in the Education Program at NCSL. She is the program policy specialist in the areas of afterschool extended learning opportunities, early childhood education, and special education. Dr. Stedron is a member of the Afterschool Technical Assistance Collaborative, a group of national organizations that provide technical assistance to state after-school networks of providers, policymakers, educators and others interested in after-school programs.

Charles Smith, Director, Youth Development Group, High/Scope Educational Research Foundation

Assuring Quality in After-School Programs: What's Working in Other States?

Dr. Charles Smith supervises the development of curriculum, training, publications, assessment tools, and research for youth programs at High/Scope (High/Scope is perhaps best known for its evaluation of the Perry Preschool Project). Dr. Smith led the development of the Youth Program Quality Assessment, a research-validated instrument that assesses the quality of youth programs for purposes of accountability, evaluation and program improvement. The PQA has been adopted by a range of state and local governments, including the Michigan Department of Education.
