Position: Director, Office of Public Leadership

The Institute of Government and Public Affairs seeks a new Director for its Office of Public Leadership, which provides executive education, leadership management training, mentoring and other opportunities for local government officials.

 

The Institute of Government and Public Affairs (IGPA) at the University of Illinois is seeking to fill the position of Director of its Office of Public Leadership. This position can be located in the IGPA Chicago, Springfield or Urbana offices.

The Office of Public Leadership (OPL) within IGPA provides executive education, leadership management training, mentoring and other learning opportunities for elected and appointed government officials, primarily at the local and state levels of government. The Office also serves in a consulting role for units of government interested in improving their leadership education.

The Director is responsible for the design, development and administration of OPL initiatives. A major component of this position's responsibilities will be to establish and foster partnerships with local, state and federal government agencies to increase their awareness of IGPA and to create contractual OPL relationships. The "entrepreneurial" aspects of this position are very important. The Director also oversees and is ultimately responsible for all budgetary aspects for OPL. He/she also would need to have hands-on involvement with executive leadership education.

Candidates must possess a Master's degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years experience in a professional or governmental position in the public sector at a level requiring regular contact with elected officials or with executive of administrative officers; terminal degree (Ph.D. or J.D.) preferred. Other required qualifications include: ability to interact with senior executives in the identification of education and training needs and the framing of developmental strategies and programs; experience in teaching seminars and in facilitating focus groups; creative problem solving with excellent judgment, analytical, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated high proficiency in public speaking and written communications, combined with strong administrative and organizational talents; strong customer-service and organizational development skills; ability to effectively influence others in the organization; and a record of accomplishments in the public and/or educational sector.

This is a full-time, 12-month academic professional position. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
