The events within America’s financial system in the past couple of weeks have many people wondering about their own financial future. Two forums sponsored by IGPA -- on September 30 in Chicago and October 1 in Urbana -- will try to provide answers.

The events within America’s financial system in the past couple of weeks have many people wondering about their own financial future. There are many questions, including whether the economy can recover quickly and what the prospects are for the economy, in the United States and globally, in the coming months and years.

The Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois will bring together nationally known experts on the economy, tax policy and the financial markets to offer analysis about the current situation, the proposals before Congress and the prospects for the future. These experts will speak in Chicago on Tuesday, September 30, and in Urbana on Wednesday, October 1.

“These forums offer an opportunity to hear a helpful synopsis of the economic policy proposals contained in the major party platforms and on the recent economic situation embracing us all,” said Robert F. Rich, director of IGPA. “There will also be an opportunity to ask questions of our nationally-recognized experts in this area.”

The Tuesday forum, held in cooperation with the Public Affairs Committee of the Union League Club of Chicago, will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Union League Club, 65 W. Jackson Blvd. Tickets for this luncheon are $25 and can be reserved by calling 866-794-3340 or emailing igpa@uillinois.edu.

Wednesday’s forum will be held in Room 192 of Lincoln Hall on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and will begin at 10 a.m. This forum is free and open to the public, but those planning to attend are asked to call 866-794-3340 to register.

Photo of Diane Lim RogersDiane Lim Rogers (left), chief economist for the Concord Coalition and Robert Carroll, vice president for economic policy at the Tax Foundation, will speak at both forums. Before joining the Concord Coalition, Dr. Rogers was chief economist for the House Budget Committee and she served as senior economist for the President’s Council of Economic Advisers during the last year of President Bill Clinton’s administration. Dr. Carroll (right), oversees the foundation’s tax research program and has served as a deputy assistant treasury secretary for tax analysis. He also served as an economist for the President’s Council of Economic Advisers in President George W. Bush’s administration.

Dr. Rogers and Dr. Carroll will be joined on Tuesday by Dr. Robert Chirinko, professor of finance at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Chirinko is a specialist in business behavior, focusing on the financial markets, capital formation and corporate finance.

Dr. George Pennacchi will join Dr. Rogers and Dr. Carroll in Urbana. Dr. Pennacchi is a professor of finance and co-director of the Office for Banking Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also serves as program coordinator for deposit insurance at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's Center for Financial Research and is a research associate at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Dr. Pennacchi’s research focuses on the valuation of fixed-income securities and government guarantees.

Both forums will be moderated by Don Fullerton, a member of the IGPA faculty and is the Gutgsell Professor of Finance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Fullerton, like Dr. Carroll,  has served as a deputy assistant secretary for tax analysis in the Treasury Department.
