Geoffrey J.D. Hewings

Geoffrey Hewings is a professor in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Departments of Geography, Economics, and Urban and Regional Planning and is a member of the Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

Hewings heads the Regional Economics Applications Laboratory and is currently working on the development of the Illinois Economic Observatory, which will analyze the Illinois economy.

"IGPA provides a strong link between the best academic practice and public policy," says Hewings. "In the work that I do, it is important to share the findings with decision-makers to help them become better informed about the impacts of their actions, the alternatives and some of the options that they might not have considered."

Hewings major research efforts are directed toward modeling of urban, regional and interregional economic systems. Much of this work is based on a set of econometric-input-output models that have been developed for several metropolitan areas and states in the United States as well as several regions in Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Japan.

Hewings received his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Birmingham, England. He then received his Master’s and Doctorate Degrees from the University of Washington, Seattle.
