  • In this time of economic uncertainty, a report from the Institute of Government and Public Affairs shows that the University of Illinois- with a student body of nearly 70,000 and more than 23, 000 faculty and staff on all three campuses- pumps more than $13 billion into the state’s economy every year. The study, compiled by three faculty members of the University’s IGPA, found that for every dollar the state spent on the U of I, the system generated more than $17 into the Illinois economy.

  • The year 2008 marks 40 years since the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The Act protects
    individual rights and fosters residential integration. This forward-looking conference focused on
    research, policies, and programs that move beyond anti-discrimination enforcement to examine
    the other barriers to integration. More than 70 researchers, policymakers, and community leaders
    from universities, government, and non-profit organizations attended this conference and worked
    toward an action agenda for the future.

  • Policies for environmental protection have an impact on the lives of all U.S. citizens by regulating pollution, imposing costs, and influencing economic decisions. The latest edition of "Policy Forum" looks at how regulations on greenhouse gas emissions affect residents of the nation and of Illinois, including the possibility of effects that vary by income group.

  • The January 2009 Illinois Economic Review, which is produced by IGPA economist Geoffrey Hewings and the Regional Economic Applications Laboratory, shows Illinois lost 36,000 more jobs in December 2008. Illinois lost nearly 101,000 jobs in 2008 and is forecast to lose another 147,000 jobs in 2009, according to the analysis by REAL.

    State government in Illinois always has supported public higher education, particularly the University of Illinois.We place a high value on that support and constantly look for ways to return value to the state, to serve those who have helped establish our legacy.

  •  The Illinois Constitution requires that the question of calling a new constitutional convention be placed on the ballot during general election every 20 years. The last time such a convention occurred was in 1970, a convention which redrafted and amended the 1870 constitution, which included many specific provisions concerning local government debt, cumulative voting, and various requirements on local government in order to be able to pass laws, such as going to Springfield for every major decision.

  •  Dimensions of diversity include but are not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, physical abilities, geographic location, and class and socioeconomic status.  Public policy concerning diversity most often revolves around the question of inclusion – the civil rights movement, women’s rights movement and other civil rights movements aimed to institutionalize equitable hiring, wage, and other practices.

  •  Illinois is home to nine public universities, 48 community colleges, and 123 private colleges and universities. In Fall 2006, 25 percent of students were enrolled in public universities, 43 percent in community colleges, and the other 32 percent in private colleges and universities. 68 percent of students were undergraduates, and the rest were enrolled in graduate or professional programs in the state.
