IGPA has proposed a new hybrid retirement system for employees of public colleges and universities that would be partially funded by additional contributions from workers and the universities that employ them. Click here to read the full paper.

The plan concentrates on the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) and is designed to reduce the state government’s payments into the system by billions of dollars over time.

Jan. 10, 2012 _ The state’s fiscal challenges continue to loom large despite a significant income tax increase and spending cap implemented almost a year ago. Sept. 9, 2011 _ The president’s primetime address to a joint session of Congress on Thursday provided an overview of a $447 billion jobs package intended to provide a “jolt” to the national economy.

After a steady increase for over a year, a key indicator of the Illinois economy has stalled in the three summer months. The University of Illinois Flash Index stayed at 97.8 in August, unchanged from June and July, reports economist J. Fred Giertz, who compiles the index for the IGPA. 

As attention continues to focus on the national economy and deficit reduction, IGPA experts comment on the impact of the national discussion on Illinois.
