About

IGPA invites you to our next faculty coffee chat on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 from 9 – 10 am CT, virtually, on Zoom.

We’re hosting Dr. Helen Lee, along with co-PI Dr. Joanna Buscemi to speak about Pediatric Dental Surgery: An Inflection Point for Families to Pivot from Disease and Towards Health. Dr. Lee has partnered with Dr. Buscemi, a clinical psychologist, from DePaul University to develop a parenting intervention for pediatric dental surgery families called Preventing Recurrent Operations Targeting Early Childhood Caries Treatment (PROTECT). PROTECT is an NIH/NIDCR funded clinical trial to test the efficacy of a community health worker-led intervention to support change in children’s toothbrushing and added sugar intake habits.

Dr. Lee is a pediatric anesthesiologist whose research has focused on health disparities at the intersection of medicine and dentistry. Dr. Lee’s academic journey is marked by excellence. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from Boston University. Her medical journey began at the University of North Dakota, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Her  specialized training includes anesthesiology and critical care at the University of Chicago, followed by fellowships in pediatric anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins. She further honed her research expertise during a fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.
